Kom jag osökt att tänka på min gamla kompis Ngo Cong Duc.
Hade tågluffat till Paris och en dåre i hotellrummet intill satt och knackade på sin skrivmaskin dygnet runt.
Nåväl, det visade sig att dåren som satt och knackade var en förtjusande man vid namn Ngo Cong Duc. Han drev en franskspråkig tidning i Paris som riktade sig till vietnameser. Tidningen var regim- och USA-kritisk, vill jag minnas. Det var alltså under Vietnam-krigets dagar, nån gång 1972 eller så.
Ngo visade sig vara en glad och världsvan lax som egentligen gav fan i politik och USA-imperialism och sånt och egentligen längtade efter livets goda, men nu var han satt där han var satt.
Bestämde vi att käka middag tillsammans och Ngo, som varit med förr, beställde ett jättefat med ostron av diverse färg och form, en nymodighet från en judegrabb från söder. Minns inte om vi drack vin eller champagne till men fint som fan var det.
Bestämdes att vi skulle hålla kontakten när vi kom hem till Stockholm, för Ngo bodde periodvis i Stockholm också visade det sig.
Första dan tillbaka i Stockholm, vem springer jag på om inte Ngo. Senare blir jag bjuden på avskedsfest, för nu var kriget vunnet och amerikanarna hade sjappa från Vietnam.
Gick aldrig på den där avskedsfesten, fick förhinder och sen tappade vi kontakten.
Några år senare var jag i en liten semsterhåla på den franska atlantkusten och käkade på en vietnames. Kunde jag inte avhålla mig från att fråga efter Ngo och lo and behold, han och restaurangägaren var födda i samma by och Ngo var lyckligt återbördad till Vietnam och drev en tidning, tror jag.
Har många gånger tänkt på hur det gick för Ngo Cong Duc. Nån som vet?
